Coeurs Volants
Fluttering Hearts
2016, reedition and facsimile. Screen printing. 48.5 x 39cm, cotton paper.
Marcel Duchamp designed the collage "Coeurs Volants" in 1936 as a screen print for the cover of the magazine Cahier d'Art 1-2. The issue was dedicated to the Surrealists. In it, Gabrielle Buffet-Picabia wrote an essay on Duchamp's machines and optical experiments entitled "Coeurs Volants".
The contrast and vibration of colors between the red and blue alternating hearts creates an optical illusion that makes the heart appear to be pulsing.
There have been various other versions and re-editions of "Coeurs Volants". In 1959 it became part of the first monograph on Duchamp, written by Robert Lebel.
In 1967, at Duchamp's request and permission, artists and publishers Alison Knowles and Dick Higgins adopted the motif on the cover of Emmet Williams' Concrete Poetry publication Sweetheart. They also invited Duchamp to a new silkscreen re-edition, which he signed.
Ever since I got to know the original cover of the Cahier d'Art magazine, I've been amazed at how the quality of the colors and the effect of the vibrations have remained after so many years. I was already familiar with the motif from offset reproductions and from the cover of Robert Lebel's monograph. But with the aging of the paper, the colors have lost their impact.
When I had access to the screen printing workshop in FAAP (São Paulo) and experimented with screen printing, the color contrast reminded me of the image of "Coeurs Volants". Finally, I did not resist the temptation to make a small reedition.
